The Texas Rangers were looking to avenge their first loss of the season to the Astros on national television. They sent second year pitching sensation Yu Darvish to the mound and he was dazzling. Darvish carried a perfect game into the ninth inning with 107 pitches. With a 7-0 lead, he got two quick outs which brought Marwin Gonzalez to the plate. Gonzalez was first pitch swinging and lined a single back up the middle for a base hit to break up the perfect game and no hitter. Darvish would be pulled after 111 pitches and the Rangers would go on to win 2-0. More here.
ESPN’s Outside the Lines uncovered another shocking account occurring in major Division 1 College sports. This time it came from the Rutgers men’s basketball team and their head coach Mike Rice. Rice was suspended for three games in December and fined $50,000 but the school never announced the reason. OTL released videos of Rice verbally and physically abusing players in practice using gay slurs and kicking players among other things. The school has yet to respond. More here.
The Eagles have completely made over their secondary which included releasing free agent bust cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha has found a new home in the Bay Area. The former Oakland Raider is joining the San Francisco 49ers. He reached an agreement on a one-year deal with a base salary of $1.35 million. He could earn as much as $3 million with performance bonuses. The deal is expected to be finalized today. More here.
