The Phillies were looking to take the first two games of the series with the Braves last night as rookie Ethan Martin got his third career start, his second against the Braves. Martin allowed three runs on six hits over five innings of work while striking out six and walking two. Unfortunately, he was out-dueled by Braves starter Kris Medlen who allowed just one run on five hits over seven innings of work. Chris Johnson's two-run home run is all the Braves would need as they went on to win 3-1. More here.
The Pittsburgh Pirates were battling the St. Louis Cardinals last night in St. Louis as the two teams are neck-and-neck atop the NL Central. With the Pirates leading 3-0, the Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and would later tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. In the 14th, Adron Chambers lined a single to left field that scored Jon Jay, barely, to win the game 4-3 for St. Louis. More here.
The Manny Ramirez experiment in Texas is over. The Rangers announced last night that they have released the 41 year old outfielder so he can "explore other options" around Major League Baseball. He was batting .259 with three home runs and 13 RBIs in 30 games for Triple-A Round Rock. More here.
