The Phillies kicked off a series with the Washington Nationals last night at Citizens Bank Park. A.J. Burnett threw seven shutout innings allowing just one run with a season-high 12 strikeouts. Cody Asche hit a monster home run to rightfield in the fifth inning to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Carlos Ruiz went deep tonight for the fourth time this season with his seventh-inning blast than ended up being the game-winning run as the Phillies won 3-2. More here.
Many around the league expected the Rams to call the Eagles to discuss the availability of backup quarterback Mark Sanchez. That would've been a very short conversation. USA Today's Tom Pelissero reports Sanchez would rather remain in Philadelphia as a backup in Chip Kelly's system than rejoin his former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer in St. Louis. The Eagles are looking to improve their special teams. Kicker Alex Henery has watched his accuracy numbers decline and he missed a 31-yard field goal on Thursday night against the Steelers. That now has the front office scouting teams with two kickers looking to bring in further competition for Henery. One of the kickers the Eagles were looking at was released yesterday. More here.
