The Phillies were looking to continue their winning ways with Cole Hamels on the mound last night. Hamels pitched another fabulous game but would get the no decision as he allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings. Domonic Brown hit his 25th home run of the year but it was the Cubs' Donnie Murphy who was the real dagger. Murphy hit his second home run of the night, a three-run shot, in the top of the ninth to seal a 5-2 victory for Chicago. More here.
Prior to the start of the game, the Phillies and second baseman Chase Utley agreed to a contract extension that would keep Utley in Philadelphia through at least 2015. The deal is for two years and is reportedly worth $27 million with multiple vesting options. More here.
Alex Rodriguez is in trouble but still in the lineup. He officially filed an appeal of his 211 game suspension with Major League Baseball yesterday. The appeal will be heard by an independent arbitrator and the arbitrator isn't expected to rule on the matter until November or December. More here.
