The New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins faced off in an Atlantic Division matchup yesterday at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh. It was the second game in a home-and-home between the two squads with the Devils taking the first game on Saturday at the Prudential Center 3-1. The Devils would use two David Clarkson goals to pace themselves to a 3-1 win yesterday as well. The win puts the Devils in first place in the division and Eastern Conference. They have taken 19 of a possible 24 points this season with an 8-1-3 record. The loss drops the Penguins to 8-5-0 on the year. More here.
The Mariners and a former AL Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez agreed to a record five-year, $135.5 million extension last week. The deal would keep the 26 year old righthander in Seattle through the 2019 season. Despite premature report last week, the deal has not been completed. Both the Mariners and representatives for Hernandez are working through some issues. One major issue at hand is the condition of Hernandez’s throwing elbow. Hernandez has 1620.1 innings in his big league career and the team is reportedly worried about the wear and tear on his arm so early in his career. More here.
The Miami Heat went head-to-head with the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday afternoon in a marquee matchup. After being tied at halftime, the Heat used strong defensive performances in the third and fourth quarter to win 107-97 over Kobe and the Lakers. Bryant scored 28 points and had nine assists for the Lakers in their 28 loss of the season. LeBron James scored 32 points with seven rebounds. He set a Heat franchise record scoring 30+ points in five straight games. He is just the third player in NBA history, along with Adrian Dantley and Moses Malone, who scored 30+ points and shooting 60% or better from the field in five straight games. More here.
