The Sixers got out to a scorching start last night against Memphis. They opened up a 17 point lead in the first quarter led by Nick Young’s nine first quarter points. The Sixers set a season high by scoring 33 points in the first quarter. Their best start this season. They ended the first leading 33-20. The Grizzlies stormed back with a monster second quarter. Memphis shot 14-for-18 in the quarter and outscored the Sixers 37-21 to take a 57-54 lead into halftime. The third quarter started out much better for the 76ers as they jumped out to an early lead before the Grizzlies clawed back to tie the game at 79 at the end of the third. The two teams played a back and forth fourth quarter that saw the likes of Marc Gasol hitting 3-pointers. The Grizzlies would hit more shots in crunch time to win 103-100 as Nick Young’s 3-point attempt at the end of the game was blocked by Gasol. More here.
Tiger Woods was forced to finish the remaining 11 holes of the Farmers Insurance Open yesterday at Torrey Pines. Woods held a four shot lead after 54 holes and a six shot lead when play was suspended on Sunday. Woods would hold on for a four shot win at 14-under to take home his first victory of 2013. It was his eighth career victory at Torrey Pines which is the most ever for Woods at one golf course. More here.
The Michigan Wolverines are the nation’s new No. 1 team and they hold the top spot for the first time since 1992. Michigan had an opportunity two weeks ago to take the top spot after North Carolina State knocked off top ranked Duke but the Wolverines fell to rival Ohio State. The Kansas Jayhawks check in at No. 2. Indiana, Florida, and Duke round out the top 5. It certainly makes for a good matchup next Saturday as the Indiana Hoosiers host the Michigan Wolverines.
