The Rangers got at it quickly last night against the Flyers as Michael Del Zotto beat Ilya Bryzgalov on a slap shot to put the Rangers up 1-0 just 1:57 into the game. The second period was similar to the first with a lot of back and forth action with significant time spent in the neutral zone. The Rangers went to work on the power play when a shot from the point was stopped by Bryzgalov who was screen but Rangers captain Ryan Callahan took the rebounded and punched it home to give New York a 2-0 lead. The third started off slow before the Rangers would be called for a bench minor penalty which put the Flyers on the power play. Just under a minute into the power play, Wayne Simmonds went into the corner and came away with the puck and found a wide open Kimmo Timonen who sniped a wrister over Lundqvist’s shoulder to cut New York’s lead in half. The Flyers would have other opportunities down the stretch but could not control the power play. The Flyers did not even get a shot on goal in the final 15 seconds with an extra attacker. The Rangers would hold on to win 2-1. More here.
Today was media day at the Super Bowl and there was a lot of buzz around Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis. As many assumed he would be asked about the murder he was charged with in 2000, news came out from Sports Illustrated that Lewis had taken a banned substance to recover from his torn triceps suffered earlier this year. Lewis used deer antler spray which has a banned substance, IGF-1, in it. IGF-1 is on a list provided by the NFL of banned substances. Lewis claimed that there was a similar report “two years ago” but the report was false. More here.
Yesterday was a big day for banned substances! Earlier in the day a report came out from a Miami newspaper that Yankees third baseman, along with Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez and other Major League players were given performance-enhancing drugs as recently as last season. Rodriguez came out in 2009 saying that he used performance-enhancing drugs from 2001 to 2003 but did not use them since then. The report yesterday claims that he used them in 2012. More here.
