Cliff Lee took the mound for the Phillies looking to take the first three games of their four game set with the Nationals. He went seven innings allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out six. Unfortunately he was out-dueled by Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez who went seven innings allowing one run on six hits. Less than two weeks ago it was announced that former Phillies catcher Darren Daulton had two brain tumors. Last Monday, Daulton had successful surgery at Thomas Jefferson University hospital. Yesterday, the news we all had been dreading was released. Daulton has been diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a malignant form of brain cancer. Glioblastoma is a highly aggressive form of cancer due to how quickly the cells reproduce. More here.
Ryan Howard was placed on the disabled list on Saturday and on Monday we learned that the former NL MVP had a torn left meniscus that would require surgery. Ryan Howard has successful surgery on his meniscus this morning performed by Phillies Director of Medical Services, Dr. Michael Ciccotti, at the Rothman Institute. The recovery time is expected to be six to eight weeks. Catcher Erik Kratz had the same surgery a month ago and is already back rehabbing with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. More here.
