The Phillies were looking for a series win to get them back at .500 heading into the All Star break. Cole Hamels took the mound yesterday for the Phillies and he was great. He allowed two runs on eight hits over eight innings but did not get the win. Jonathan Papelbon blew his fifth save of the year. They Phillies would load the bases with one out in the 10th inning but Delmon Young struck out to bring John Mayberry Jr. to the plate. Mayberry lined a single back up the middle to win 4-3 and get to 48-48. More here.
The United States Olympic Track & Field team took another hit yesterday. The United states record holder for the 100 meter dash, Tyson Gay, admitted that he tested positive for a banned substance. he would not reveal what the substance but said that he would pull out of the World Championships next month in Moscow. The Braves had some holes to fill in their outfield. They were without Jason Heyward, Justin Upton, and B.J. Upton for their series finale with the Cincinnati Reds. B.J. was place on the 15 day DL yesterday and the Braves struggled to stop the Reds. Jay Bruce went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. The Reds would go on to win 8-4. More here.
