The Phillies kicked off their four game set with the Nationals last night at Citizens Bank Park. John Lannan got the call for the Phillies as he faced his former team for the second time this season. Lannan was dazzling in eight shutout innings allowing just four hits. Ben Revere had another three hit night to help the Phillies to a 3-0 lead in the ninth. Jonathan Papelbon had a shaky ninth but got through it as the Phillies would go on to win 3-2. More here.
Things go from bad to worse for the Phillies. Ryan Howard underwent a MRI yesterday morning after being placed on the disabled list on Saturday with a left knee injury. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced that the former All-Star has a torn meniscus and will be out for 6-8 weeks following surgery. In 80 games this season, Howard is hitting .266/.319/.465 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI. More here.
The All-Star Game festivities technically get underway Sunday but, in reality, they get underway next Monday with the Home Run Derby. The National League Team was selected yesterday by Mets third baseman David Wright and their was one glaring omission. The NL team will be Wright, Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper, and Rockies sluggers Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer. Phillies OF Dom Brown was not selected. YankeeRobinson Cano, Tigers 1B Prince Fielder, and Orioles 1B Chris Davis will swing for the AL with another player still TBD. More here.
