The Phillies sent Cole Hamels to the hill last night looking for their third consecutive victory in Hamels' starts. Hamels battled through eight innings allowing just one run on six hits with four strikeouts. The Phillies would get two runs from Chase Utley and Dom Brown added his 64th RBI of the year to give the Phillies the 4-2 victory as Antonio Bastardo got his second save of the season. More here.
It took a while but it finally happened. Former Flyers head coach Fred Shero was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame yesterday. Shero, who passed away in 1990 at the age of 65, coached the Flyers for seven seasons. He was 390-225-119 in his 734 games coaching over ten seasons. Shero led the Flyers to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 1973-74 and 1974-75 while leading them to the Finals in 1975-76 as well. More here.
The Flyers had a big day yesterday. Along with the great news about Fred Shero, they locked up restricted free agent Erik Gustafsson with a one-year, $1 million one-way contract. Gustafsson, 24, made tremendous strides last season in 27 games with the Flyers as he scored three goals, added five assists for eight points while averaging 20:09 of ice time. He went on to log 30+ minutes of ice time per game in the World Hockey Championships this spring. More here.
