The Phillies opened up their four game series with the Brewers last night at Miller Park. Tyler Cloyd got the start for the Phillies and was spectacular. He went 6.2 innings allowing no runs on four hits but did walk five Brewers. The Phillies scored in each of the first three innings and got a solo shot from Delmon Young in the fifth inning. The Brewers would get one back but it would not be enough as the Phillies cruised to their fifth straight win 5-1 and move over .500 for the first time this season. More here.
Last night was the first round of the MLB first-year player draft and the Phillies had a first round selection for the first time since 2010. They selected 16th overall, their highest selection since 2001 when they selected Gavin Floyd fourth overall. The Phillies selected high school shortstop JP Crawford with the pick. The 6'2" 185 lbs. California native projects to be one of the few players to remain at shortstop throughout his career. Scouting Report here.
The San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat opened up the NBA Finals last night in Miami. The two teams were back and forth for the entire first half with the Heat outscoring the Spurs 24-23 in the first quarter and 28-26 in the second quarter to take a 52-49 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. The two teams played an even third quarter before the Spurs took the game in the fourth quarter. They opened an 88-81 lead with two minutes remaining before the Heat cut the lead to 90-88 with just over 30 seconds left. Tony Parker let the shot clock go all the way down and released a floater with 0.1 seconds on the shot clock that fell. It was reviewed, counted, and gave the Spurs a 92-88 lead with 5.2 seconds left in which they held on to take Game 1. More here.
The Los Angeles Kings were looking to fight back and tie their series with the Chicago Blackhawks last night at the Staples Center. They got off to a good start as Slava Voynov beat Corey Crawford to give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead just 3:28 into the first period. Bryan Bickell would tie the game for Chicago 10 minutes later. In the second period, the Kings would take the lead again when Dustin Penner scored on Crawford. Chicago would not give up as Patrick Kane responded with his third of the playoffs. Marian Hossa would put Chicago up 3-2 just 1:10 in the third off a beautiful feed from Michal Handzus. That is all the Blackhawks would need as they would win 3-2 and take a 3-1 lead in the series.
