The Miami Marlins are once again having a fire sale but this time it is unlike anything we have ever seen before. After investing heavily last offseason and having MLB’s 7th highest payroll, the Marlins stumbled their way to 69 wins. Last night (it is expected to be finalized today) they trades SS Jose Reyes, C John Buck, INF Emilio Bonafacio, SPs Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle to the Toronto Blue Jays. Their top two salaries now are SP Ricky Nolasco and INF Greg Dobbs. More here.
The New York Daily News has polled 12 Jets players, both on offense and defense, about backup quarterback Tim Tebow. One Jets player said “He’s terrible” and they agreed that Mark Sanchez should remain the starter over Tebow despite the fact that Sanchez ranks dead last in completion percentage and has four red zone interceptions (and we thought Michael Vick was bad in the red zone). The Duke Blue Devils and Kentucky Wildcats squared off in the first marquee matchup of the 2012-13 college basketball season. Last night the Blue Devils rode the shoulders of Seth Curry as he dropped 23 points in the effort. Duke ripped off a 13-3 run halfway through the second half that opened up their lead to 14. The defending national champions cut into the lead but it wasn’t enough as Duke would go on to win 75-68. More here.
Two of the biggest turn-arounds from 2011 in Major league Baseball has earned Bob Melvin and Davey Johnson Manager of the Year awards. Melvin, who lead the Oakland A’s to the AL West title, received 16 first place votes to outpace the 12 first place votes received by Buck Showalter, who managed the upstart Baltimore Orioles this year. Davey Johnson received 23 first place votes in the National League to win the award after leading the Nationals to the NL East crown. More here.
