The Philadelphia 76ers kicked off their regular season last night at the Wells Fargo Center as they welcomed former Sixer, Andre Iguodala, back to town. Behind 16 points and 12 rebounds from Spencer Hawes off the bench, the Sixers went on to take hold of the game, despite a late scare from the Nuggets. The Sixers won 84-75 in front of 19,101 fans. Sixers captain Jrue Holiday had until midnight last night to agree to a contract extension with the team that drafted him. After last night’s 84-75 win, Holiday agreed to a 4 year, $41 million deal with the Sixers. His deal is similar to Warriors PG Stephen Curry (4 years/$40 million) and Nuggets PG (4 years/$48 million). Holiday opened the season up with 14 points and 11 assists. More here.
The new-look, much-hyped Los Angeles Lakers are off to a rocky start. After falling to the Dallas Mavericks on opening night, they headed to Portland to take on the Trail Blazers. They lost PG Steve Nash late in the first half with a knee injury when he collided with Portland rookie PG Damian Lillard. Lillard poured in 22 points and 11 assists to pace the Trail Blazers to a 116-106 win. Lakers’ All Star center Dwight Howard added 33 points and 14 rebounds in the loss. More here.
Jerry Sandusky has been sent to prison. Since October 9th, Sandusky has been undergoing psychological tests in a facility outside Harrisburg to determine where he should be sent. Yesterday, Sandusky was sent to Greene State Prison in southwest Pennsylvania. Greene State is where most of the Pennsylvania death row inmates are held. He will be under constant supervision given the high profile nature of his case. More here.
