The Carolina Panthers were looking to extend their win streak to seven games against the Dolphins on Sunday. They trailed 16-3 late in the first half but stormed back and got the ball to the goal line with under one minute remaining and trailing 16-13. Cam Newton ran a play-action pass to Greg Olsen with 43 seconds remaining to win 20-16. Newton needed just 174 passing yards to win the game. More here.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were looking for their third straight win as they went into Detroit to take on the Lions. Matthew Stafford was picked off three times before the Lions, trailing by three, marched down the field with time running out. On third down, Stafford found Calvin Johnson inside the 5-yard line when the ball was knocked out of his hands and into the arms of cornerback Johnthan Banks to seal the 24-21 victory for Tampa. The North Carolina Tar Heels and Louisville Cardinals faced off in a heavyweight match-up at the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament. With the two teams tied at halftime, the Tar Heels outscored the defending national champions 49-40 in the second half to roll to a 93-84 victory and their first upset of the season. Sophomore guard Marcus Paige led North Carolina with 32 points. More here.
Around the NFC East:
The Cowboys and Giants clashed in a late afternoon game with big NFC East implications. The Cowboys jumped out to a 21-6 lead thanks to a fumble recovery taken back for a touchdown and two Tony Romo touchdown passes. The Giants would fight all the way back for a late score and would get the two-point conversion to tie the game at 21. Dallas would drive down the field and call a timeout with four seconds remaining when Dan Bailey came in to kick the game winning field goal with no time remaining. More here.
