The Flyers made a move yesterday to bolster their defensive depth. The team signed defenseman Hal Gill to a one-year, $700,000 contract with the team. He attended training camp on a pro-tryout deal and impressed the coaching staff and front office. Gill is the first player to make the Flyers on a pro-tryout deal since Blair Betts in 2009. The Pittsburgh Pirates hosted their first playoff game since 1992 at PNC Park last night against the Cincinnati Reds. Pirates catcher Russell Martin's 405-foot blast in the second inning put Pittsburgh up 2-0. With the score sitting 5-1 Pittsburgh in the seventh, Martin hit a 407-foot home run to left field to make it 6-1. Pittsburgh would cruise to a 6-2 victory to take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS. More here.
The Flyers opponent tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs, opened up their season last night against Danny Briere and the Canadiens. Former Flyer James van Riemsdyk scored the first goal of the NHL season with his power play goal just eight minutes into the first period. The Leafs would roll to a 4-3 victory over Montreal.
