Today's version of The Beat was prepared by myself, and one of our newer writers, Carter Fillman. If his name sounds familiar, it probably is. Carter wrote for La Salle football and basketball on the site last year and like myself, operated the La Salle Sports Twitter account. He graduated from La Salle College High School last year and is currently a freshman at the alma mater of Delonte West, Saint Joseph's University. Please welcome Carter to the team!
EAGLES EMBARRASS THEMSELVES AGAINST DALLAS IN HOME OPENER 20-10
Oh my god where do I begin? Oh, I know...
Sam Bradford went 23/37 with 224 yards, a TD and an interception. Pretty good numbers, but he made some boneheaded mistakes as well, including an interception to Sean Lee in the end zone and couldn't recover a fumble. The offensive line looked very weak, and Jason Kelce snapped the ball too late on one play and caused Dallas to recover on a fumble. And finally, the run game. Again, there was none. DeMarco Murray had 13 carries for a grand total of two yards! He had nine last week, bringing his season total of 11! Just broke double digits today, let's see when he can break triple digits! Ryan Matthews had one carry for zero yards. Sam Bradford led the team in rushing with nine yards. Horrible.
The defense held their own for the most part and they broke Tony Romo's collarbone, but please let Kiko Alonso and Mychal Kendricks be okay. Alonso is getting an MRI later today on his left knee. Now, to Byron Maxwell. Oh good lord, he's definitely the next Nnamdi Asomugha and that's not good at all. I wouldn't laugh at that, but...
BRAVES SWEEP PHILLIES, WIN EVERY GAME 2-1
Well the good news is that the games were close. The bad news is they still lost every game. Despite solid outings by Adam Morgan, Jerad Eickhoff, and Aaron Nola, the Phils offense sputtered in every game. With only 12 games remaining in the season, the Phillies are six game away from breaking the 100 loss column. Truly Legendary. They'll turn to a pitcher TBD against the Marlins after the day off. Never heard of him, so I'll guess that TBD is a rookie. (GAME ONE, TWO, THREE RECAPS)
FLYERS HOCKEY SOMEWHAT RETURNS!
YO, the Flyers! I have never been this happy about exhibition hockey, especially after last night's game. It's two split-squad games against the New York Islanders tonight, as one half plays in Allentown (on CSN) with head coach Dave Hakstol and assistant Gord Murphy, while the other half goes to Brooklyn (on 97.5 The Fanatic) with assistants Ian Laperriere and Joe Mullen. No Steve Mason tonight in either game. Other notables missing include forwards Tim Brent, and Colin McDonald, along with defensemen Mark Alt, Travis Sanheim, Nick Schultz, and Mark Streit.
Tranquillo Barnetta scored his first goal as a member of the Union in the 3rd minute and the team never looked back. Sebastian Le Toux recorded his 50th career assist, which made him only the 16th play in MLS history to record 50 career goals and assists. C.J. Sapong scored an insurance goal midway through the second half as well. The Union will travel take on the New England Revolution Saturday night before hosting the U.S. Open Cup Final four days later at home against Sporting Kansas City. (RECAP)
TEMPLE GETS LATE FIELD GOAL TO IMPROVE TO 3-0
The Owls escaped what would have put a pretty big damper on their early season tear. Special team heroics by redshirt senior Will Hayes put Temple within one point after he returned a blocked PAT for two points. QB P.J. Walker then marched the Owls down field and put them into field goal range, while sophomore Austin Jones nailed home a 33-yarder with seven seconds left.
Walker finished 28-of-48 for 391 yards, a touchdown, and two picks. The stats don't reveal the whole story though, as Walker struggled to read the defense on a consistent basis and only finished with a 42.2 QBR. Seven different Owls caught two or more passes, but John Christopher led them all with seven catches for 72 yards.
Temple takes a bye week coming up and will be back in action October 2nd against Charlotte down at Jerry Richardson Stadium. With a win there, the Owls could find themselves sneaking into the top 25, as they currently are on the outside looking in. (RECAP)
BRET BIELMA IS A HUGE BULLY, AND KLIFF KINGSBURY WAS OUR PROTECTOR
At a high school coaches convention in Texas this summer, Arkansas head coach Bret Bielma told Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury that if Texas Tech throws more than 70 times and plays with no fullback, then Arkansas would dominate. Well, Bielma has lost to Toledo and Texas Tech consecutively, and now Kingsbury would like to say something. More of this and other college football highs and lows in Helmet Stickers this week! DINE-IN WAWA OPENS IN CENTER CITY, WILL GIVE THE POPE A HOAGIE OF HIS CHOICE
Brace yourselves, he's coming, and the city is already blocking some lanes/towing cars in the city. Look at it this way, just get through this week, and all is normal again. And you get a new Wawa in Center City, and it has dine-in eating, a first! But the most important part is that the Pope is getting a free hoagie of his choice, so...
TUPAC ALIVE?! ANOTHER CONSPIRACY
I have a feeling this will never go away, even 19 years after his death. David Myers, a retired police officer who is in critical condition in a hospital, recently claimed that he was paid about $1.5 million to help fake the star's death. He also said that Suge Knight played a big role in it as well. Knight is currently in jail awaiting trial for murder. This could be a huge development into the Tupac conspiracy, but there's one big concern. Where is David Myers? The article (listed below) just says "in hospital," which is gramatically wrong and nobody knows where he is? He could be the next Lennay Kekua for crying out loud! (CONSPIRACY THEORY)
