The Phillies were looking to take the first two games of their series against the Nationals last night but Wilson Ramos & Co. had other ideas. Ramos went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run and two walks before being pulled later in the game. He ended up with four RBIs on the night. Gio Gonzalez allowed five runs (only one earned) with three walks and six strikeouts over 5.2 innings of work. The Nationals would go on to win 9-6. More here.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have their first non-losing season since 1992 as they won their 81st game of the year last night. Travis Snider hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to give Pittsburgh the 4-3 lead. Mark Melancon got his first save of the year as the Pirates improve to 81-57. More here.
One of the stalwarts of the Houston Texans defense has signed up to continue the ride. Linebacker Brian Cushing, a New Jersey native, signed a six-year contract extension which will keep him in Houston through 2019 and is reportedly worth $55.643 million with $21 million guaranteed. More here.
