I am not big on politics. I have my beliefs but I don’t share them. I am not ignorant but I find it ridiculous that these politicians think so little of the general population that they think they can get away with these blatant lies when we can look up the truth. Up until this week I thought “wow those people are so blinded by loyalty to their party/politician that they are actually buying what he is saying” and I judged those people. Yesterday, my view of those people changed entirely. I realized that these politicians and the Philadelphia Eagles have a lot in common that I never saw before.
Despite the regular season success, the fact remains that the Eagles never won a Super Bowl. Yet, completely ignoring this glaring fact, the Eagles front office brass had the stones to go in front of the television cameras and declare to the country that they Eagles are the gold standard. Are you kidding me? I need to get me a pair of those rose-colored glasses! Since when was the “gold standard” bar lowered to “well, you have regular season success but no rings?”
In April 2010, the Eagles were in desperate need of defensive backs, help on the defensive and offensive lines, and linebackers. So in the first round of the draft, the Eagles traded up from the 24th overall pick to the 14th pick to select defensive end Brandon Graham. It was a decision that was highly criticized at the time and today, two and a half years later, is still being criticized. With the next pick, the Seattle Seahawks took Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas. With the following pick, the Giants took Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. Two picks later, the Steelers drafted Pro Bowl offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey. We can keep going but you get the idea. They tried to sell the fans that Graham was the right guy but, as time has shown, they miscalculated.
However, in 2012, the defense started to get things right. But after losing two straight games heading into the bye week, the Eagles fired Castillo and hired Todd Bowles to “fix” the defense. After two games, a front office source said that firing Castillo was a “miscalculation.”
In April 2011, the Eagles drafted 26 (going on 27) year old fireman Danny Watkins to play right guard. Watkins was absolutely terrible in the first half of the 2012 season and, now he has been out the past two weeks with an ankle injury. GM Howie Roseman announced last week that it was a chronic ankle injury dating back to his Baylor days. This was not news they disclosed when they drafted him and tried to sell him to the Eagles fans in 2011. (Note: In case you were wondering, the very next pick after Watkins was the Saints selection of defensive end Cameron Jordan. Jordan tormented Michael Vick on Monday night sacking him 3 times, wracking up six total tackles and forcing a fumble that killed the Eagles first drive.) The selection of Watkins, unless something unforeseen happens, appears like a miscalculation.
So when Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is saying that Roseman knows what he is doing and is improving this team, he is lying. When Roseman says the “team” is capable of a lot of positive things, he is lying. This is not a team; the Eagles are a bunch of hired guns that look apathetic on the field (with some exceptions: Vick, Ryans, etc.). There is no team; there are just 11 guys on the field wearing the same colored jersey. When Reid says that his message in the locker room is being received loud and clear by the team, he is lying.
You want numbers to prove they are lying? Since the beginning of the 2011 season, the Eagles are 11-13 and have not been better than 3-5 at the midway point in the season since 2010. They have been outscored 183-133 this season. The Eagles three wins have been by a combined four points. They have not scored more than 24 points in any of their first eight games. Even the awful 2011 Eagles were able to get two blow out victories in their first eight games last year despite a 3-5 start.
This is not a good football team right now. Any one saying otherwise is not being truthful.
So when you see these commercials with the politicians lying, just think your Philadelphia Eagles are doing the same thing to you.
