It was a make-or-break day for the Philadelphia Flyers. After taking a commanding 3-0 lead in their series against the Penguins, Pittsburgh won the next two games making it 3-2 heading into Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. If Pittsburgh won Game 6, the chances of them losing a decisive Game 7 on home ice with all of the momentum in the series would be slim-to-none.
The Flyers needed the end it on home ice in Game 6.
Philadelphia alternate captain Claude Giroux went to then-head coach Peter Laviolette and asked for the first shift. What happened next no one could have predicted.
Talk about setting the tone early.
The debate about who was going to place Chris Pronger as the Flyers captain ended on this day. There was no way the Flyers could not make him the captain after this performance. The Flyers went on to win the game 5-1 and win the series 4-2.
