The Flyers went up to Newark for Gam3 against the Devils with the series tied at one game apiece. The Flyers scored first which has proved to be the kiss of death so far in the playoffs. The Flyers were 1-3 entering last night when scoring first. The Devils would take a 2-1 lead after scoring 20 second apart. After going back and forth on the next three goals, they would head to overtime. With just over two minutes left in the first overtime, Alexei Ponikarovsky beat Ilya Bryzgalov after a juicy rebound to give the Devils the 4-3 overtime win and 2-1 series lead. The Phillies had a very early start yesterday afternoon in Atlanta as first pitch was slated for 12:10 pm. If you missed the first pitch, you probably missed the entire game. The game moved at a blistering pace and ended with the Phillies winning 4-0 in just two hours and two minutes. Joe Blanton threw his first complete game shutout in a Phillies uniform as he mowed down the Braves hitters needing just 88 pitches over nine innings. More here.
As happy as the New York/New Jersey fans were when the Devils won is how upset they would be over the following hour. The Miami Heat all but eliminated the New York Knicks last night. The Heat took it to the Knicks as they opened up a commanding lead early and won by a score of 87-70. The win gave the Heat a 3-0 series lead and it appears that the Knicks have all but packed it in. As if the Knicks losing wasn’t enough, Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was injured during batting practice. Rivera was shagging fly balls in the outfield when he was running down a ball when his knee gave out. According the New York Yankees, Rivera has suffered a torn ACL. The typical recovery from an ACL tear is 9 months which has many wondering whether this is the end of a career for the 42 year old closer. More here.
