Who wouldn't be? Eagles, Falcons, NBC Sunday Night Football. You've had the whole day to get ready, watching all other NFL games, and ordering the "family meal deal" from your local pizza joint. Also, who wouldn't be excited when you know that Justin Bieber AND Usher are in the house. Kickoff goes to the Eagles and now we get to see if Dion Lewis can learn from his mistakes in St. Louis.
ATL 7: PHI 0: Still anxious, but calm
Matt Ryan passes to Roddy White. Before I get to this, how hilarious was Tony Gonzalez's opening introduction. Okay, had to say something about that. Major props to him for turning that into a joke. This was still before the defense really started kicking in and making some great stops. It's early, lets see this play out.
ATL 7: PHI 7: Satisfied, calm
Vick lead a great drive that ended with a short pass to Maclin for the touchdown, and Maclin almost fell over before he even made it into the endzone trying to catch the ball.
PHI 10: ATL 7: Calm , happy.
Eagles should have scored on this drive, getting all the way down to the 3 yard line, Vick almost through a pick, but at least it ended in points. Jason Avant had a nice catch for 29 yards on this drive. There hasnt been a game yet where a national tv commentator hasn't used the term "sure handed" even when Avant drops one.
ATL 14: PHI 10: Frustrated, a little angry.
Vick with the first of his three fumbles of the game. It was a play action pass that got completely blown up and Vick was nailed by Peria Jerry, and Ray Edwards returned the ball for 64 yards before getting tackled by an amazing display of hustle by Desean Jackson. Matt Ryan took the short field and found Tony Gonzalez in the back of the endzone for a TD before the half. When the Eagles got the ball back, Vick fumbles AGAIN and gives the ball back to the Falcons at midfield, but Ryan throws a pick to Nnamdi Asomugha. This is awesome for a guy who never ggt thrown to the past couple of seasons.
ATL 21: PHI 10: Frustrated, really angry.
Vick 'gave' the ball to the Falcons on a fake interception that Andy Reid did not challenge. The ball was tough to see, but after many many different camera angles, you could see that the ball definitely hit the ground. Ryan took the ball and moved it down and found Tony Gonzalez again for a TD.
ATL 21: PHI 17: Less frustrated, happier
Vick hits Maclin for a 36 yard TD pass. Incredible play and great athleticism by Jason Peters. Yes, Jason Peters, the left tackle. He was way out there with the lead block that any corner back would want no part of. Great play, feeling much better about the way things are turning out.
PHI 24: ATL 21: Okay, feeling pretty good.
On the previous drive, the Falcons started from their own 1 yard line thanks to an amazing amazing punt. The Falcons punter, Matt Bosher, shanked it way right and put the Eagles at the 20 yard line after the 18 yard punt. The plays consisted of only Vick and Shady and ended up with a short run by Shady.
Vick goes down on that dreadful looking hit he took then had his head whipped into his own lineman. Completely legal hit, so nothing to be mad about here. Although Dunta Robinson, what the heck is your problem? Two kill shots in two years against our top two receivers? Apparently one fine isn't enough to make you learn. From here on out Kafka takes over. Not nervous until NBC shows Kafka's "best" game in his college career in which he attempted 78 passes and threw 5 picks. Oh.......great.
PHI 31: ATL 28: Uh oh. Nervous. Anxious.
Ryan leads a long drive after the Eagles score. Goes the length of the field and on the scoring play. Jason Babin commits a stupid penalty that means nothing because the guy he holds, turns out making the scoring TD catch. Personally, Babin should have just tackled him. Would've made it alllllll worth it.
ATL 35: PHI 31: Fuming. Heated.
Eagles get one first down, then immediately give the ball back to the Falcons. Shortly after, Michael Turner, who has probably the biggest legs out of any human being ive ever seen, rips off a 61 yard rush. Thanks to the hustle of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, he brings down Turner. But the drive was capped off a few plays later with a Michael Turner short run. At this point, I am real scared. I haven't seen Vick back on the sideline yet, so he's definitely not coming back. Vince Young is holding a clipboard, in street clothes. Turning to Mike Kafka can make anyone nervous. But you gotta give the guy credit, this last drive was impressive. Although some terrible play call on 3rd and 3 by the coaching. Why do you throw a 2 yard pass with the game on the line? Kafka was really impressive for the whole drive. Don't agree with it, but hey, there is a reason I was sitting on a couch, miles and miles away, doing all I could to will the team to victory, and by that I mean wearing my Vick jersey.
ATL 35: PHI 31: (4th and 3) Sad. Demoralized. Upset. Heated.
Maclin has to catch that ball. Kafka did all he could. He put the ball past the defender, right into Maclin's chest, nailed the numbers in his jersey, both of Maclin's hands inside of very sticky receiver gloves. This is where i changed the channel. I couldn't bear it. I knew how much time was left on the clock, but with the way things were going, with zero momentum, a "Miracle at the Georgia Dome" was not in the works.
Hope that you felt the same way I did. I know fellow Whiz Wit writer, Mike McCabe felt the same way. Severe mood changes were the highlight of the night. My roommates, non-Eagles fans, were documenting my mood swings, helping me cope and telling me "See? everything will be fine" to "Hey shouldn't Andy Reid have challenged that?" and "I'm sorry man, tough loss."
