One name to keep an eye on that the Phillies might target is San Diego Padres third base prospect Jedd Gyorko ("JER-ko"). The 24 year old third baseman is blocked by NL MVP finalist Chase Headley at the Major League level. The Padres think that they can move Gyorko to second base but, if the right deal comes along, he might be moved.
Gyorko is a natural third baseman who played his college ball at West Virginia. In 369 at-bats in Triple-A last year, Gyorko hit .328 with 24 homeruns and 83 RBI. Overall between Double-A and Triple-A in 2012, Gyorko hit .311 with 30 homeruns and 100 RBI in 557 at-bats. He stands 5’10” 195 lbs and hits right handed. He fits well with the Phillies needs (power, right handed hitter, third baseman) but what would it take to get the Padres No. 2 prospect? Pitching.
Luckily for the Phillies that is seemingly the only position the Phillies have some sort of depth. Whether it would take a young Major League hurler like Vance Worley or a top minor league prospect like a Trevor May or Jesse Biddle remains to be seen. Nonetheless, the Phillies could have the necessary assets to acquire Gyorko. We will see how the week plays out.
