Take a look at some of the best cornerbacks in the league: Darrelle Revis, Nnamdi Asomugha, and, going back a few years, Champ Bailey. These guys can intercept passes but they do more than just jump routes. They have press a receiver on the line, they can get off a block, and they can wrap up and tackle. I don’t think I have ever seen Asante Samuel do any of these things.
Before this season I respected Asante because QBs wouldn’t throw his was because they were afraid he would jump the route and, more importantly, would pick on the weaker cornerback on the other side. I love when he guesses right, jumps the route, and comes up with a big interception. But how many times have we seen Samuel guess wrong and give up the big play? Too often. The Eagles signed Asomugha in the offseason and slotted him into their Cover 2 zone defense that fits Samuel style of play. Asomugha isn’t a zone defender. He is a guy who plays tough man-to-man defense against other teams’ top wide receivers. The Eagles kept their defense to fit Samuel’s play even though they signed one of the best corners in football and the system doesn’t fit his style of play. Samuel shouldn’t be complaining about the Eagles, he should be thanking them.
Samuel is complaining that the front office was trying to trade him. He said that he will play his game and collect his paycheck even though he knows they are trying to move him. How standup of him. The Eagles DID trade Ronnie Brown but he returned after the Jerome Harrison brain tumor incident. Have you heard a complaint from Brown? No. The Eagles didn’t even trade Samuel and he is complaining.
Do us all a favor, Asante. Shut up. Please, stop complaining. The Eagles are 2-4 right now and are preparing for Dallas on Sunday night. As fans, we have complained about Reid, Castillo and about their four game losing streak. We don’t need to listen to one of our starting corner backs complain about how he almost got traded and how his feelings are hurt. My feelings are hurt every time you don’t tackle someone or give up on a play. My feelings are hurt every time you guess wrong when jumping a route and give up a big play.
Just. Stop. Complaining. This is not the time to be selfish. This is the time to turn the season around. Let’s go. Get ready for Sunday Asante because Dallas is going to be tough.
