Alvin Chang of ESPN offered two possibilities of ways the Flyers could potentially get Bryzgalov’s cap hit off their books. One of the suggestions would be to include Bryzgalov in a trade to Columbus for Rick Nash and, to help with the contract situation Columbus would send their goaltender, Steve Mason ($2.9 million cap hit) to the Flyers. This would expand the Nash trade and make it enormous. Another, and perhaps more realistic, possibility is to include a “mulligan on one contract” (to use Chang’s words) in the new collective bargaining agreement. This would similar to the NBA’s amnesty clause that was included in their new CBA. The Flyers could write off Bryzgalov’s cap hit and free themselves of the $5.67 million cap hit Bryzgalov has for the next eight seasons after 2011-12.
Are either of these going to happen? Who knows but the way Bryzgalov has been playing this year, anything to get his cap hit off the books would be a plus.
