Vick was never an accurate passer but had a great arm. His highest completion percentage before coming to the Eagles was 56.4%. However, last year, his first year as a starter under Andy Reid, Vick completed a career high 62.6% of his passes and passed for more than 3,000 yards for the first time in his career. Young has a leg up on Vick when it comes to passing. Young has completed more than 60% of his passes twice with his highest coming in 2007 when he completed 62.3% of his passes. He has only had a completion percentage lower than 58.7 once and that came in his rookie campaign where he completed 51.1% of his passes. Vick has had two seasons as a starter in which his completion percentage was 50% or lower.
So with all of these similarities between the quarterbacks, why sign Young? The easy answer is “well if Vick gets hurt, the Eagles have a former Pro Bowler in Young who can step in and still maintain the mobile quarterback offense.” That is correct. It makes all the sense in the world that the Eagles signed Young for that reason. But, could there be another reason? I’m thinking yes.
When it comes to negotiations Vick’s argument may not be as strong now that Young is in the fold. They have a similar quarterback who has proven to be more accurate than Vick in the past and he also will have a year under his belt working with Marty Mornhinweg. The Eagles, ultimately, have found a replacement for Vick should he decide to demand too much money or want to test free agency. Young gives the Eagles leverage in the negotiation to say “Hey here is our offer. If you don’t like it, we will turn the offense over to the younger (no pun intended) version of you.”
Vince Young, primarily, provides the Eagles with a solid back up in case Michael Vick is injured at any point between now and the end of the season. However, Young also provides the Eagles with leverage when it comes to the long term contract negotiations with Michael Vick. It will be interesting to see how the Eagles handle the Vince Young situation. Our first glimpse of Vick and Young in game action will be at the first preseason game, which is slated for August 11th against the Ravens at the Linc.
