For the Flyers, Bobrovsky (8-2-1, 2.52 GAA) will start and that has the city throwing around the phrase that is thrown around every year in the City of Brotherly Love “goalie controversy.” This is the second time that Bryzgalov (14-8-3, 3.01 GAA) has been “lost in the woods” this season and it is only January 2nd. Bobrovsky has played well over his last few starts and earned the start. Bryzgalov’s nine year, $51 million contract has people concerned about his consistency. Flyers star Claude Giroux (45) is currently one point behind Henrik Sedin (46) for the NHL lead in points. Giroux is also third in the league in assists.
As for the Rangers, they are starting the face of their franchise, goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist is 16-7-4 this year with a 1.91 GAA. Goals are at a premium with Lundqvist. John Tortorella announced yesterday that defenseman Marc Staal would not play in the Winter Classic. Well, he is a liar. Staal is in the Rangers lineup this afternoon to play his first minutes this season. Rangers forward Marian Gaborik is second in the league in goals with 22 and trails leader Steven Stamkos by four goals.
For those heading down to the game, conditions are a little different than the past few mild days in Philadelphia. As of 1:30, it is 41 degrees at the ballpark with 22 mph winds. Bundle up, hockey fans! The game can be seen on NBC beginning at 3 pm.
